Ferit Edgü
Ferit Edgü shaped Turkish fiction through novels, stories, essays, poetry, and screenwriting, returning to eastern mountain communities he encountered while teaching in Hakkâri. The Wounded Age and Eastern Tales brings together two books in English translation by Aron Aji. NYRB Classics published the volume in 2023. Its novella follows a journalist trying to understand displaced people through his guide Vahap, while shorter regional eastern narratives draw on teacher encounters with villages, isolation, and unequal power. His compressed prose approaches poetry, leaving landscape, silence, and interrupted conversation to carry historical pressure. His Hakkâri experience also informed the novel A Season in Hakkari. By pairing a reporter and a remembering teacher, The Wounded Age and Eastern Tales gives English language readers an introduction to his spare, adventurous account of distance and responsibility.
