Frank Zappa was an American composer, guitarist, bandleader, and record producer known for crossing rock, jazz, orchestral writing, satire, and studio experimentation. He led the Mothers of Invention and maintained unusually close control over recording and production across a large body of work. The Real Frank Zappa Book, published by Poseidon Press in 1989, presents his recollections and opinions on music, art, politics, touring, and public debate. Journalist Peter Occhiogrosso helped shape the book from extensive recorded conversations, so the result carries Zappa's speaking voice while reflecting an acknowledged collaboration. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Zappa in 1995, two years after his death. As a book, the memoir provides context for the same independence, technical curiosity, and resistance to censorship that marked his musical career.
