Gaius Valerius Catullus was a Roman lyric poet whose surviving collection is conventionally known as Catulli Carmina. The corpus moves between compact personal poems, invective, wedding songs, learned mythological narrative, and elegiac reflection. Its changing meters and tones are central to Catullus’s literary identity: intimate addresses can sit beside public satire, while longer compositions engage Greek models through highly worked Latin verse. The poems preserve recurring names and relationships, including Lesbia, but the collection is not a straightforward autobiography and should be read as crafted poetry rather than documentary confession. Catullus belonged to the late Roman Republic and helped establish a concise, technically ambitious mode that later Latin poets repeatedly answered. Catulli Carmina therefore matters both as the principal record of his work and as a major point of contact between Hellenistic poetics and Roman literary culture.
