An Introduction to Statistical Learning has four names on it: Gareth James, Daniela Witten, Trevor Hastie and Robert Tibshirani. It is the accessible companion to Hastie and Tibshirani's own Elements of Statistical Learning, trading proofs for worked examples and lab sections, first in R and then in a Python edition, and Springer has kept a free PDF available since publication in 2013. That is a large part of why it became the standard first course. James is a statistician who was dean of the Goizueta Business School at Emory, having spent years at USC, and works on functional data analysis and prediction with many more variables than observations.
