George Thomas Clark was a Welsh engineer and antiquary whose practical knowledge of structures informed a long study of castles and medieval lordships. The Land of Morgan grew from his work with Glamorgan charters and examines the history of the Lordship of Glamorgan through conquest, territorial organization, families, and surviving records. Material behind the book first appeared through archaeological papers before the substantial 1883 volume. Clark helped found the organization later known as the Royal Archaeological Institute and remained active in the Cambrian Archaeological Association. His engineering career drew him toward fortification, an interest developed further in Medieval Military Architecture in England. The Dictionary of Welsh Biography notes that later scholarship rejected some of his theories while continuing to value his exact descriptions. That distinction matters when reading Clark today. His documentary labor and architectural observation remain useful, but his interpretations belong to nineteenth-century antiquarian practice. The book consequently offers both a regional history and evidence of how Victorian scholars assembled the medieval past from charters, pedigrees, buildings, and landscape.
