Henri Poincaré

Henri Poincaré was a French mathematician, theoretical physicist, and philosopher of science whose research connected geometry, celestial mechanics, differential equations, and the foundations of physics. Science and Hypothesis, first published in French in 1902, presents his account of how scientific principles arise from observation, convention, and useful intellectual frameworks. Its chapters move through number, space, mechanics, and physical theory, asking where experiment ends and definition begins. Poincaré’s view of geometry became especially influential because he argued that experience alone does not select a single geometric system. The book remains an accessible route into the philosophical questions that accompanied his technical work, while modern editions clarify differences among earlier translations.
