About this book

This volume, the first in a series called Science and Education, gathers three works by Henri Poincaré in the authorised English translation by George Bruce Halsted: Science and Hypothesis, The Value of Science and Science and Method. The series is edited by J. McKeen Cattell.

One passage considers the historical sciences, saying that no hypothesis about the remote past can be confirmed directly, yet may lead to predictions that can be tested, and it gives Schliemann and the legend of Troy as an example. Another argues that the mathematician should not be a mere supplier of formulas to the physicist, and that mathematical physics and pure analysis interpenetrate. A later passage discusses Lesage's theory and the ether crossed by luminous waves.
