Henry Oyen was a Norwegian-born American writer whose adventure fiction drew heavily on the forests and lumber settlements of Wisconsin. Born Olaf Henry Oyen in 1882, he immigrated with his family to Waupaca and developed a literary career around the landscapes and working communities he knew. Gaston Olaf appeared in 1917 after serialization in Adventure, where its Wisconsin setting and lumber-camp tensions suited the magazine's readership. The story places a Norwegian immigrant figure within the social pressures of a St. Croix region settlement, combining physical action with questions of belonging and reputation. Oyen also wrote stories and novels about woodsmen, frontier labour, and local conflict, establishing a body of popular fiction distinct from urban adventure. His career was brief because he died in 1921, yet his work preserved a regional world shaped by timber, migration, and demanding outdoor work. Gaston Olaf is especially representative because its title character connects Oyen's Scandinavian background with his adopted Wisconsin environment.
