Henry Inman drew on decades in the American West as an army officer, frontiersman, and author. Born in New York in 1837, he held an army commission and later worked in Kansas, where trails, posts, hunters, and settlers furnished material for his historical and fictional writing. A pioneer from Kentucky; an idyl of the Raton range was published in Topeka by Crane and Company in 1898. The short western story follows Dick Curtis and Clariss in the landscape of the Raton Range, placing domestic attachment within the pressures of remote settlement. Its regional setting aligns with Inman’s better-known accounts of the Santa Fe Trail and frontier figures. He also wrote The Old Santa Fe Trail and collaborated with William F. Cody on The Great Salt Lake Trail. This 1898 work forms part of the imaginative side of that bibliography, using a setting Inman knew to give a compact story the textures of travel, isolation, and frontier memory.
