Author: Hosea Ballou

Hosea Ballou became a defining American Universalist minister, theologian, editor, hymn writer, and religious controversialist during the movement's second generation. Born in New Hampshire in 1771, he began preaching during the eighteenth century's final decade and served congregations across New England before becoming pastor of Boston's Second Universalist Church in 1817. His influential A Treatise on Atonement argued for a rational, non-Calvinist understanding of salvation, while his sermons and periodical work helped shape American Universalist debate. The Child’s Scriptural Catechism first appeared in 1810, using a question-and-answer form to present biblical instruction to young learners; an 1819 Boston edition was published by Henry Bowen. Ballou also wrote Notes on the Parables of the New Testament, contributed extensively to hymn collections, and helped edit Universalist periodicals. His plain argumentative style was designed for congregations as much as clergy. The catechism belongs to that practical educational side of a career better known for doctrinal writing and preaching.
