James Hayden Tufts

James Hayden Tufts joined philosophy, education, and civic reform through the early University of Chicago and the Chicago school of pragmatism. James Tufts: A Memorial preserves an account of his father, a Congregational minister and educator, linking family history with the institutions that shaped Tufts's own intellectual development. After study at Amherst College, Yale Divinity School, and the University of Freiburg, Tufts joined Chicago's philosophy faculty in 1892. He later chaired the department, served as dean and vice-president, acted as university president, and edited the International Journal of Ethics. His scholarship joined ethical theory to social questions, while his public work addressed housing, labour, and social legislation in Chicago. Tufts also collaborated with John Dewey on Ethics, a textbook that became one of his best-known publications. His papers at the University of Chicago document both academic administration and sustained participation in civic organizations, revealing how closely his philosophical and public roles were connected.
