James Palmer
James Palmer works across science fiction, fantasy, weird horror, and new pulp as an author, editor, and publisher. Shadows Through Time gathers four connected novellas about the Victorian explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton into one volume: The Depths of Time, Shadows Over London, The Dream Key, and The Map of Time. Palmer sends his fictionalized Burton through time aboard Captain Nemo's Nautilus, into conflicts involving Professor Moriarty, Mycroft Holmes, Aleister Crowley, alien cults, and threats drawn from classic speculative literature. Falstaff Books published the 2020 collection as The Fantastical Adventures of Sir Richard Francis Burton, Volume One. The omnibus format makes its design clear: each adventure can supply a different literary encounter while Burton's unstable path through history holds the sequence together. Palmer's editorial projects, including Monster Earth and Strange Trails, share this interest in combining pulp traditions, alternate history, monsters, and recognizable genre figures. Shadows Through Time applies that collaborative spirit to a single hero moving through four linked tales.
