Johann Kaspar Lavater

Johann Kaspar Lavater was a Swiss Reformed pastor, poet, theologian, and writer whose ideas circulated widely through eighteenth-century European correspondence. Aphorisms On Man appeared in English in 1788 through Henry Fuseli's translation from Lavater's manuscript. The compact observations consider character, friendship, talent, self-knowledge, judgment, art, and religious belief, inviting readers to mark statements that provoke agreement or discomfort. Lavater is also associated with Essays on Physiognomy, an influential and now historically contested attempt to connect outward appearance with inner character. His broader theology emphasized moral self-examination and the possibility of personal improvement. Fuseli, better known as a painter, gave Aphorisms on Man an English literary life distinct from its manuscript origin, and William Blake later annotated a copy. The book consequently sits at an intersection of theology, moral psychology, visual culture, and the concise form of the aphorism rather than belonging to only one discipline.
