Alphonse de Lamartine
Alphonse de Lamartine was a French poet, prose writer, historian, and statesman associated with the Romantic movement and the political upheavals of 1848. Atheism Among the People presents an English translation of his public argument about belief, civic life, and popular education. Cours Familier de Litterature belongs to the expansive monthly literary course through which he discussed writers, genres, and the moral purposes of literature. Raphael draws on memory and idealized love in a work that moves between autobiographical reflection and Romantic fiction. Together, the three titles show how Lamartine carried the meditative voice of his poetry into criticism, public address, and prose narrative. Bibliothèque nationale de France and Project Gutenberg records also preserve the publication and translation histories through which these works reached later readers.
