John Wilmot, the second Earl of Rochester, wrote poetry and served as a courtier closely associated with the Restoration court of Charles II. The Works of the Right Honourable John Earl of Rochester became a prominent posthumous collection through which his satires, songs, translations, and occasional poems reached a wider audience. During his lifetime, much of his verse circulated in manuscript among a courtly circle, creating lasting problems of attribution for editors. His best-known poems include A Satyr Against Mankind, Upon Nothing, and sharp attacks on political and sexual hypocrisy. Rochester also adapted John Fletcher's Valentinian and wrote in forms ranging from lyric to dramatic satire. His reputation joined technical wit with a deliberately provocative public persona, but modern scholarship distinguishes the documented poems from works merely attached to his notorious name. Because early printed collections often mixed reliable and doubtful material, The Works remains part of both his literary legacy and the textual history through which that legacy was constructed.
