About this book

In the Border Country is by Josephine Daskam Bacon, and its contents list The Hut in the woods, The Farm by the Forest and The Castle on the Dunes. A surgeon says that if, even when the ether is at her lips, she will raise her finger, he will stop it, and a woman answers that she shall remember but shall not raise her finger. A woman tells the Dame that she is leaving out something without which all the seasons are empty, and the Dame says that she finds pleasure in them all.

The Dame blows a little silver whistle hanging among her keys, and some dozen maids come hurrying from all parts of the rambling farm-house to hear her orders. The Countess says that when her lord died she was as one mad, and set herself toward the convent, to end there, praying for him. A very holy hermit who lives beneath Merlin Oak, in the very midst and heart of the Dunes, set the Countess right, she says, and told her she was not made for a religious.
