An opportunity to escape lets Michaela and her sister leave with their friends, but the outside world presents new creatures, unstable alliances, and questions about the strange boy who resembles them. Hawkings keeps the science-fiction premise close to adolescent concerns: school, independence, friendship, and the fear of losing family. The 254-page novel is teenage science fiction and holds the first position in a two-volume sequence. Fourteen Days, published in 2014, continues that sequence and returns to the sisters’ struggle for safety. The Sphinx Project therefore works as both a self-contained flight from confinement and the foundation for a longer story about chosen bonds, responsibility, and survival.
