Kazuo Ishiguro
1954
Born in Nagasaki in 1954 and taken to Britain at five, which left him writing about England as somebody who learned it rather than absorbed it. That distance is the whole method.
The Remains of the Day gives a butler the entire novel to explain his life and lets the reader see everything he is refusing to notice. Never Let Me Go withholds what its boarding school is for until the children themselves work it out. Klara and the Sun does something similar through an artificial friend who has no way to know what she is missing.
He took the Nobel in 2017. The prose is deliberately plain, the narrators are unreliable in the saddest possible way, and almost nothing is ever said outright.
