Margaret S. Haycraft was a British novelist and poet whose long publishing career began in the late Victorian period. Bibliographic research records her fuller name as Margaret Scott Haycraft and traces fiction and verse appearing from 1880 onward. Silverbeach Manor, first published in London in 1891, follows an orphan named Pansy who lives with an aunt running a village post office and store. Wealthy Mrs. Adair offers the girl entry into high society on the condition that she leave her former life behind. That premise gives the story room to examine aspiration, loyalty, gratitude, and the pressures created by sudden changes in status. A 2016 White Tree edition explicitly identifies itself as an abridgment of the original romance. Haycraft's extensive bibliography also includes stories for young readers, school narratives, temperance fiction, and poetry.
