Rebecca Harding Davis pioneered American literary realism through novels and journalism examining industrial labor, poverty, gender, and moral choice. Margret Howth, a Story of To-day was her first novel, published in 1862 after the success of her influential novella Life in the Iron-Mills. Set around an Indiana woollen mill, it follows Margret Howth, her impoverished family, reform-minded employer Stephen Holmes, and the disabled peddler Lois Yare. Davis uses their intersecting lives to question ambition, charity, religious duty, and the distance between abstract reform and material hardship. Born in Pennsylvania and raised in what became West Virginia, she later married journalist L. Clarke Davis and contributed widely to national magazines. Her writing often brought working people and women’s constrained choices into forms associated with serious social debate. Margret Howth, a Story of To-day develops those concerns through multiple viewpoints and a contemporary setting, marking Davis’s transition from magazine publication to the longer realist novel.
