Writing Active Setting runs to three short volumes, among them Book 1, Characterization and Sensory Detail, and Book 3, Anchoring, Action, as a Character and More. The case Mary Buckham makes across the series is that a setting should carry weight in a scene, revealing character, raising tension or moving the plot along, rather than sitting behind the dialogue as scenery. Writer's Digest Books published the material in fuller form in 2015 as A Writer's Guide to Active Setting, for which Dianna Love wrote the foreword. Buckham teaches craft classes online and writes fiction too: the urban fantasy Invisible Recruits novels, built around Alex Noziak and Kelly McAllister, and the young adult Red Moon books written with Love, who is also her co-author on the workshop guide Break Into Fiction.
