About this book
1492, credited to Mary Johnston, is arranged in numbered chapters. The narrator, Jayme de Marchena, sits by the sea near Palos on a gray morning in a gray mood. The narrator says the narrator's grandmother was Jewess, and that in corners they said that she never truly recanted.
In a scene with an innkeeper and his wife serving at the tables, a shipmaster says, “This time last year I was in London, and I saw their King.” The narrator describes a great and comely feast with, as in Cuba, a dance before the feast, and should say that three hundred young men and maidens danced. The narrator says the Admiral was growing old before their eyes, not in his mind or his soul but in his frame.
