Author: Michael McCarthy

Michael McCarthy spent his career recording how English is really spoken rather than how grammars say it ought to be. With Ronald Carter he built CANCODE, a five million word corpus of everyday British conversation, then CANBEC, a million words of spoken business English, and the two of them turned that evidence into the Cambridge Grammar of English in 2006. He is Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Nottingham and has held visiting or adjunct chairs at Limerick, Newcastle and Penn State, with an honorary professorship at Valencia. More than fifty books and over a hundred journal articles carry his name. English Phrasal Verbs in Use Advanced, written with Felicity O'Dell and published by Cambridge University Press in 2007, presents about a thousand phrasal verbs in sixty two-page units pitched at C1 and C2 learners, each explanation followed by exercises and an answer key so the book works without a teacher. Many of the verbs were chosen with the CAE, CPE and IELTS examinations in mind.
