Ned Buntline
Ned Buntline was the writing name of Edward Zane Carroll Judson, a prolific nineteenth-century author associated with adventure fiction and popular western storytelling. Wild Bill’s Last Trail brings Wild Bill Hickok into a fast-moving frontier narrative shaped by pursuit, disguise, loyalty, and reputation. Although Buntline knew how to turn public figures into dramatic characters, the novel belongs to popular fiction rather than documentary biography. It appeared in the Diamond Dick Library after Buntline's lifetime, illustrating how publishers continued circulating his name and western material for new readers. Wild Bill’s Last Trail also shows the compressed pacing of serial entertainment, where reversals and encounters keep the plot moving across short chapters. Buntline's broader career included journalism, stage writing, and numerous tales issued for mass audiences. Here, his importance lies in the transformation of frontier celebrity into repeatable print mythology, not in providing a reliable historical record of Hickok's life.
