Pemberton Ginther

Pemberton Ginther wrote and illustrated the Miss Pat stories about sisters pursuing artistic training and independence. Born in America in 1869, Ginther shaped both their narratives and visual presentation. Miss Pat at School follows Patricia and Elinor at an academy of fine arts, where studio work, instructors, classmates, and Patricia’s uncertainty about her ability shape the story. Ginther supplied the book’s frontispiece as well as its text. Miss Pat at Artemis Lodge moves Patricia into a residence shared by art and music students and develops her ambitions as a singer alongside friendships involving Elinor, Judith, and other residents. Both novels belong to early twentieth-century juvenile fiction centered on young women, education, and the arts. Ginther lived until 1959, and the shared Miss Pat wording signals continuity. Each title names a separate stage in Patricia’s development, one at art school and the other within the communal life of Artemis Lodge.
