Rennell Rodd pursued parallel careers as a British diplomat, poet, and classical scholar, with official appointments in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Before his senior diplomatic service, he published Songs In The South, an early collection of poems issued in London in 1881. The volume appeared when Rodd was still a young writer and helped establish the literary interests that continued alongside his official work. An American edition was later introduced by Oscar Wilde under the title Rose Leaf and Apple Leaf, giving the poems a separate transatlantic history. Their themes include love, memory, landscape, beauty, and the classical past, subjects that also reflect Rodd's education and Mediterranean interests. Although diplomacy became his principal profession, he continued to write poetry, memoir, and studies of Greece and Rome. Songs In The South is therefore important as an early statement of the literary identity he maintained throughout a long career in government service and letters.
