Robert Abbot developed his known publication from practical experience as an English confectioner active around 1800. The Housekeeper’s Valuable Present is the shortened catalogue form of The Housekeeper’s Valuable Present; Or, Lady’s Closet Companion, a practical treatise printed in London for the author around 1790. Its sections cover clarifying and boiling sugar, preserving fruit, preparing jams and jellies, making biscuits and cakes, freezing ice creams, and producing cordials. Abbot states that he had served an apprenticeship with Domenico Negri and James Gunter, confectioners in Berkeley Square, and later worked in the households of several noblemen. He explains that requests from housekeepers for recipes and technical guidance prompted the book. The Wellcome Collection records a 100-page copy and classifies it as an early work on confectionery. The Housekeeper’s Valuable Present therefore preserves the methods of a working specialist rather than presenting domestic advice detached from professional practice.
