About this book
Jacques Bonneval is subtitled The Days of the Dragonnades and is listed under Anne Manning. The contents list chapters titled The Fair of Beaucaire, The Feast of St. Magdalen and My Uncle Chambrun, among others. The first chapter, headed The Fair of Beaucaire, says there was magic, to the speaker's young ears, in the very name of the Fair of Beaucaire, and that Beaucaire is only ten miles from Nismes.
The narrator tells of getting into a mêlée of carts, wagons, and horsemen, all bound for Beaucaire. The narrator describes a tall and meagre man in a long black robe and tall pointed cap, studded with steel buttons, needles, and pins, who is an itinerant vendor of them. The needle-vender says he owes the young fellow a good turn and mentions being saved from the hoofs of le Docteur Jameray's horse and lent a handkerchief.
