About this book

The recollections describe helping a busy mother in spring, when she uncorded the bedsteads and applied whale oil inside the holes through which the ropes ran to deal with bedbugs. The narrator remembers growing big enough to help with the tedious work of putting the cords back into the beds, a task requiring two people. The hotel memories include small triangular tin candlesticks placed at the base of the windowpanes to illuminate the building on special nights.

The narrator recalls Daniel Webster as a frequent central figure at banquets in the Pemberton. The recollections acknowledge that early memories may have become mixed with a more mature understanding.
