About this book
The narrator recalls being six years old when the Civil War was declared and admits remembering less about the war than might be expected. The narrator's mother received the inspiration for the Battle Hymn of the Republic before dawn, an event the narrator learned of only many years later. A wartime breakfast recollection has the narrator's brother Harry standing on his chair and waving a newspaper while the family celebrates the fall of Vicksburg.
A dated entry records a meeting addressed by Mr. Stepniak at Mama's house to raise money for Free Russia and send responsible people to Russia for first-hand information about oppression. Another dated entry describes a Lunch Club gathering at Edith Wendell's and a letter to Mayor Matthews asking for a hospital on Rainsford Island for paupers.
