About this book
A dispute over common land brings public conflict into Cromwell's family home at Ely. In John Drinkwater's play, Elizabeth and Bridget support Oliver's resistance to the loss of local rights, while his elderly mother worries about the dangers of political action. Visits from John Hampden and Henry Ireton turn household conversation toward taxation, royal authority and the question of whether judges should serve the king or the law.
The scenes move from Ely to Parliament, Naseby and the centres of government, giving the drama a broad historical frame. Yet personal commitments remain close to its political arguments. Ireton asks to marry Bridget, Cromwell's mother offers her property to support his cause, and a labourer volunteers his savings.
