About this book
A Cigarette-Maker's Romance is a work by F. Marion Crawford. Chapter I says the inner room of a tobacconist's shop is not perhaps the spot which a writer of fiction would naturally choose as the theatre of his play. The text speaks of an odd and pathetic irony in the name borne by the sickly girl.
Beside Vjera sits another girl, and on the opposite side of the room sit two men, Victor Ivanowitch Dumnoff and the Count. The text says that the little bunch of threads which protrudes at each end is cut off with sharp scissors and the cigarette is finished. A speaker says "A joke is a joke, Akulina" and adds "But you have carried this too far. What if the Count had died?"
