About this book

The Village Rector is by Honoré de Balzac, translated by Katharine Prescott Wormeley. The contents list names, among others, chapters called The Sauviats, Veronique, Marriage, The History of Many Married Women in the Provinces and Tascheron. Sauviat came home one day, bearing a carpet he had chanced upon in some of his rounds, which he nailed himself on Veronique’s floor.

In a chapter headed The Rector at Work, Monsieur Bonnet perceives in Veronique, from the moment of her arrival at Montegnac, the existence of an inward wound, and thinks it wisest to wait for the voluntary and complete confidence of a woman who would sooner or later become his penitent. The archbishop says, with his eyes roving over the scene before him, that she has literally sown the desert.
