About this book
The dedication to Gwen and Phyllis says that, if the book can be said to be about anything in particular, which it cannot, it is, in spite of its delusive title, about bees. The contents list names, among others, Jemima, On Being Idle, On Habits, and In Defence of Wasps. The speaker of an essay says that no progress could be made while writing with a new fountain pen. The speaker's practice is to do the writing with a pencil.
A speaker commends the superior example of the Japanese in this matter, saying laughingly that they only take salt when they want to die. A passage speaks of vast spaces of earth and sky where the moorland streams sing their ancient runes over the boulders and the great tors stand out like castles of the gods against the horizon.
