About this book
A Girl of the Klondike, by Victoria Cross, is issued in America for the first time by arrangement with the author. The contents list names, among others, the chapters A Night in Town, At the West Gulch and Katrine's Neighbours. A veil of impenetrable darkness is described as having dropped upon the snow wastes, the ice-fields and the fettered Yukon.
Katrine says, tranquilly, that she and her father quarrelled a little while ago, and that since then she has been living by herself in one of those little cabins in Good Luck Row. Talbot says he comes into town very seldom, only when he wants fresh supplies, and stays up at the claim nearly all the time. A man's strike had come too late, and his wife was dead. A miner draws his pistol and fires, and the ball passes over Stephen's shoulder and goes into the wall behind him.
