About this book
George T. Flom, Ph.D., professor of Scandinavian languages and literatures at the State University of Iowa, wrote A History of Norwegian Immigration to the United States, with the subtitle From the Earliest Beginning down to the Year 1848. The title page gives Iowa City, Iowa, 1909. The foreword states the aim of presenting the progress of immigration from Norway.
One passage describes Norway's boards of guardians for the poor, its schools and its university at Christiania, with a library of three hundred and fifty thousand volumes. Another tells of Andrew Anderson, who died of the cholera in 1849, and his son John, then thirteen, who supported his mother and baby sister by peddling apples and carrying newspapers and who in 1866 launched a paper of his own, Skandinaven. Footnotes record journeys, including a party of about fifty-three from Inner Sogn that waited nearly three weeks in Bergen before sailing.
