About this book
The study discusses the widespread use of Mother Goose's name in connection with nursery rhymes and records a great development in toy-book literature during the second half of the eighteenth century. The opening address describes a dead figure on a bier, surrounded by sorrowing hawks, while a flying hawk reaches down an amulet.
The discussion of a cumulative rhyme notes that Halliwell added a line about a cock crowing on the wedding morning. The author reports an additional line supplied by a woman over seventy years old, who learned the story from her nurse and did not remember seeing it printed.
