About this book
The subtitle of this 1896 study reads Chapters on Saint-Lore and Convent Life between A.D. 500 and A.D. 1500. Lina Eckenstein begins her preface with the restlessness of periods of transition, when long-accepted standards are questioned and the present social system is seen as one phase in human development.
One passage deals with women who are worshipped locally as saints, though their existence in Christian times is hypothetical. Their legends hold little historical fact, and their cult keeps traits that are pre-Christian in character. The traveller Blunt appears there, struck in Italy by what modern saints and ancient gods have in common. Another passage covers Hildegard, abbess of the Rupertsberg, parts of whose work Scivias were laid before the Pope in 1146; a short letter to her and her lengthy reply are discussed.
