About this book

A Journey to Central Africa by Bayard Taylor has life and landscapes from Egypt, and comes with a map and illustrations by the author. The preface mentions an old Italian proverb which says a man has lived to no purpose, unless he has either built a house, begotten a son, or written a book. The narrator gallops up the gorge of Biban el Molook, the Gates of the Kings, with sand and pebbles clattering under the hoofs of the horses.

The text counts twenty-one tombs in a valley, more than half of which are of great extent and richly adorned with paintings and sculptures. The text says that in one region there is a complete change in the scenery: the magnificent forests disappear, and the shores become marshy and unhealthy, covered with tall grass. A friend of the narrator orders the shekh to stop after half a dozen strokes, whereupon the crowd laughs heartily.

About the author

Bayard Taylor

Bayard Taylor (1825-1878) was an American travel writer, poet, and diplomat whose dispatches for the New-York Tribune made him one of the most widely read correspondents of his day. His first book, Views A-foot (1846), described a walking tour of Europe made on almost no money, and he went on to report from California, Egypt, India, Japan, and the Arctic.
