About this book

Bethink Yourselves! carries a verse from Luke xxii. 53 about the hour and the power of darkness. The text says that again there is war, with sufferings necessary to nobody, utterly uncalled for, and again fraud and the universal stupefaction and brutalization of men.

A passage says that during the past century wars have destroyed fourteen million men, and that every one knows and cannot help knowing that, above all, wars, calling forth the lowest animal passions, deprave and brutalize men. The speaker says that, if there be a God, He will not ask whether he retained Chi-nam-po with its timber stores, or Port Arthur, but will ask what he has done with that life which He put at his disposal. The text says the papers set forth that indescribable enthusiasm is manifested amongst the people during the receptions of the Tsar, and answers that as a matter of fact something quite different is being manifested.
