About this book
Leo Tolstoy's Childhood, in C.J. Hogarth's translation, is told in the first person. It opens on the twelfth of August, three days after the narrator's tenth birthday, when the narrator is woken at seven in the morning by the tutor, Karl Ivanitch, slapping the wall near the narrator's head with a fly-flap. The contents list twenty-eight chapters, among them "Mamma," "Papa," "The Hunt," "The Mazurka" and "Grief."
The schoolroom is described in detail: maps torn and glued together again by Karl, a blackboard where serious faults are marked with circles and lesser ones with crosses, and a corner where the children must kneel when naughty. In one passage Woloda presents his Turk and is greeted with a flattering ovation on all sides, and the narrator, whose turn comes next, is overcome by shyness. Another passage has Natalia whispering about the forty trials a soul undergoes, which a note calls a Russian popular legend.
