About this book
A Russian Proprietor, and Other Stories was translated from the Russian by Nathan Haskell Dole. The preface says that the first story, though only a fragment of a projected novel to be called A Russian Proprietor, is perfect and complete in itself.
Nekhliudof tells Churis it is impossible to live in this hut because it's all rotten, and offers a finished cottage on credit at cost price, while Churis calls the fine cottages just like a jail. A speaker says to himself that this is what comes of trying to be a benefactor to people, that he is putting himself to inconvenience for another, and that the worst is that the other is not willing to take a step in his own behalf. Kostuilin almost falls to the ground in fright when something rushes along like a hurricane with a crashing of dry boughs, but Zhilin laughs, and the two are in doubt whether they should come out right or not.
