About this book
A Lute of Jade presents selections from the classical poets of China under the name of L. Cranmer-Byng. The introductory discussion calls the early Chinese ballads songs of peace and says many are sung to a refrain, particularly those expressing sadness. One refrain joins flowing water, a night spent dreaming, and waking sighs for the City of Chow.
A poem describes a feast spread among flowers, with red wine cups and deep draughts drunk unto The Lady Moon. A speaker hears a distant sound from the south-west swell from a gentle sigh into the roar of waves striking a cliff.
