About this book
Angel Island is a book by Inez Haynes Gillmore. A scene is set on the morning after the shipwreck, when the five men still lay where they had slept. The men are described as so bruised and bloodless of skin, so bleak and sharp of feature, so stark and hollow of eye, so rigid and moveless of limb that they might have been corpses.
For the next ten minutes, the sky presents a picture of five winged women, stationed at various points of the compass, ecstatically studying their own beautiful faces in mirrors held in their white, strong-looking hands. Last of all, Julia comes floating slowly down and takes the only one that was left, the smallest, framed in carved ivory. Pete speaks of a woman who has cut herself out some high sandals from a pair of his old boots and wears them day and night.
