About this book
Six Centuries of English Poetry has the subtitle Tennyson to Chaucer. The contents divide the poems by century, from The Nineteenth Century through the Eighteenth, Seventeenth, Sixteenth and Fifteenth to The Fourteenth Century. The contents list poems by Alfred Tennyson, such as The Lady of Shalott and The Brook, and by William Wordsworth, such as The Solitary Reaper.
The text says the extracts given at the beginning of each Century will serve to keep in mind the leading peculiarities which distinguished the poetry of each period. The text adds that the lists of poets and their works will be found valuable for purposes of reference. The notes say there is also a tradition in the church that St. Cecilia was the inventor of the organ. The book also gives verse in older spelling, such as Upon a book in cloystre alway to powre.
