About this book

Before the Bounty sailed, William Bligh had to make room for a floating nursery. His account opens with the ship being fitted to carry breadfruit plants to the West Indies, including pots, drainage pipes and a cabin arranged for their care. Published in 1792, this first-person narrative brings the expedition and the mutiny into a single account, with close attention to the practical work of sailing.

The dated entries also record life ashore at Otaheite. Bligh walks with Tinah to a house among plantations, describes gifts of bananas and tarro pudding, and explains how the pudding is prepared with coconut juice. Shipboard arrangements sit beside observations of hospitality, food and local customs. Readers interested in maritime history can follow the voyage through the details that occupied its commander, while the shore passages show how everyday encounters became part of his written record.
