About this book
Hester Thornton, twelve years old and in mourning for her mother, is sent by her stern father to a boarding school called Lavender House. She is high spirited and determined to dislike the place, and the hardest part of leaving home is saying good-bye to her baby sister Nan.
At school she meets Annie Forest, a lively, well-liked girl, and the two take against each other. Chapter titles hint at what follows: something found in a school desk, being sent to Coventry, a gypsy maid, a rescue and a prize essay. Friendship, jealousy and trust are tested along the way.
L. T. Meade, who lived from 1854 to 1914, wrote many stories for girls. This one follows the school-story pattern of its day, with a clear moral purpose, and suits readers who enjoy boarding-school life in England.
