About this book

On a September day in 1890, Lucretia Lane prepares for her wedding in a Bayswater bedroom while her friend Constance Ford watches her uneasy movements. Her mother urges her to finish dressing, and Major Stroud waits impatiently downstairs. The bride's agitation gives the preparations a troubled edge. William Clark Russell develops the scene through domestic conversation, closely observed gestures and the contrast between a public ceremony and private feeling.

The maritime setting takes a harsher shape in the island episode, where Reynolds struggles with hunger, isolation and grief after Goodhart's death. Cooking fish, fire making and the difficult work of burial give the adventure a practical, physical texture. This 1904 novel brings wedding expectations and lonely survival into the same narrative, offering readers a sea story attentive to the emotional cost of hardship.
