About this book

Across the Mesa, with a frontispiece by Henry Pitz, is dated 1922 and has twenty chapters. The first, titled Why Not?, begins on a cold wet day in the early spring of 1920 as Polly Street drives her little electric down Michigan Boulevard in Chicago with bitterness in her heart.

Other chapter titles include Athens, Juan Pachuca, Miss Chicago, The Prisoner, A Night Ride, Tom Does a Marathon and Treasure Trove. In one passage a woman called Mrs. Van, who once kept a boarding-house in New York, talks with Scott, Williams and Adams about whether Bob Street and his girl are married and about elections coming to the country. In another, a tall Bostonian named Hard greets Clara Mallory, whom he has not seen for fifteen years, since she went to Paris to study music. In a third, a car drives up a narrowing road toward a cabin in a canyon while three horsemen ride the same way.
