About this book
Penny of Top Hill Trail is by Belle Kanaris Maniates, the author of Amarilly of Clothes-Line Alley, and was published in February 1919 with a frontispiece by Philip Lyford. The frontispiece caption reads Penny and the Sheriff match wits under the stars. The book has seventeen chapters.
The first chapter begins on an afternoon in early spring, with a man lounging against the station wall waiting for the express from the east. In another passage a man tells of a girl he met in Chicago, who promised to meet him at the dock for a boat trip. In a third, a man named Kurt finds Pen alone in a sitting room and asks where the others are, and she says Francis, Billy and Betty went to bed early and Mrs. Merlin has a headache.
